There's a chill in the air and the leaves are dropping in flurries, so why not embrace the season and hit one of the city's ice rinks? Here are some of the coolest spots.

Meiji Jingu Ice Skating Rink

This rink, centrally located in Shibuya ward, conforms to international competition size.

It's a good place to practice if you have professional aspirations, as evidenced by the many wannabe Mao Asadas and Miki Andos gliding across the ice.

The rink is clean and modern with a Yamazaki convenience store and warm up room, and the ice is Zamboni-ed every two hours. There's a decent shop selling clothes and other skating accessories, and they lend out crash helmets at no extra cost.

  • Rink size: 60 meters X 30 meters
  • Hours: 12-6 p.m on weekdays and 10 a.m to 6 p.m on weekends; last entry at 5 p.m.
  • Admission:  ¥1,300 for adults/ ¥900 for children. (¥1,000/ ¥700 after 3 p.m.)
  • Skate rental: ¥500, sizes 15-31 centimeters
  • Station: Sendagaya or Kokuritsu Kyogijo, less than 5 minutes walk
  • Address: 11-1 Kasumigaoka-cho, Shinjuku-ku
  • Tel: +81 (0) 3 3403 3458

Cheap and cheerful

Edogawa Ward Sportsland

The only municipally run rink in the city, Edogawa Sportsland is open from October until May, and is a great deal at only ¥500 for entry and ¥300 for skates. They offer free 30-minute lessons on Sundays at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. The main drawback is in the location -- it's not close to a train station, so taking a bus or a car is necessary. Parking is available, though.

  • Rink size: 60 meters X 30 meters
  • Hours: 9 a.m to 6 p.m Monday, Wednesday, Friday and 10 a.m to 6 p.m Sundays and holidays
  • Admission:  ¥500/¥200
  • Skate rental: ¥300/¥200, sizes 16-31 centimeters
  • Station: Shinogaki station, then take bus 71 or 72 to Edogawa Sportsland
  • Address: 1-8-1 Higashi Shinozaki-cho, Edogawa-ku
  • Tel: +81 (0) 3 3677 1711

This swanky shopping complex is hosting a temporary rink from December 10 until January 10.

A café and bar sits alongside the rink, and a DJ is spinning tunes from R&B to Christmas music on weekend nights. Kids’ figure skating costumes are also available for rental for photo ops.

This is a great place to cut up some ice in between picking out your Jimmy Choo kicks and your Harry Winston rock.

  • Rink size: 200 sq meters with a cutout in the middle
  • Hours: 11 a.m to 9 p.m M-Sa, 11am to 8 p.m Sundays

This bright modern rink is housed in a complex that also includes a bowling alley and a putter golf course.
