A few years ago, Haji Lane was a narrow strip of outdated shophouses. Now those same shophouses have been turned into small boutiques stocked with offbeat labels that you won’t find in Singapore malls.

Although many of Haji Lane’s best shops are notoriously short-lived, a few favorites have stuck around long enough to earn loyal followings.

The Blog Shop

This consignment shop rents space to fashion designers to showcase their most dazzling creations. A canary yellow mini-skirt? An unexpected houndstooth hankie? To paraphrase Forrest Gump, the Blog Shop is a lot like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.

35 Haji Lane, tel: +65 6396 6170, www.theblogshop.sg

Monday-Friday, 1-9 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, noon-10 p.m.

Going Om

With ironic self-awareness, Going Om aims for the “ommmm” crowd with tarot card readings, yoga and meditation classes. It's not just spiritual enhancement. Going Om has a lush interior to rest your bod when shopping fatigue sets in.

PLUCK

Put a gauzy drape over an old chair and slide your grotty shoes out of sight. PLUCK resembles an ideal homes magazine, with knockout furnishings and fashion gems you won't find anywhere else. Even better, there's an ice cream parlor on site.

Tuesday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday, 1-7 p.m.

Salad Shop

This home-idea shop is usually done up in monochrome -- home furnishings in black and white with a minimalist feel. It's a good place to remake your apartment with help from someone less prone to colorful mistakes.

Monday-Saturday, noon-8 p.m.

Straits Records

You won’t find Lady Gaga in this tiny record shop. The owners decide who has soul -- and shelf space -- according to their own impeccabe tastes. That means no pop nonsense. What you’ll find is alternative, hip-hop, hardcore and reggae, alongside local and regional indie bands not easily found elsewhere.

49 Haji Lane, tel: +65 9769 4837 or +65 9385 3211, www.myspace.com/straitsrecords

Daily: 3 p.m.-late

Sup Clothing

Emo, skateboard, punk and hip-hop fans come to Sup Clothing to get rigged out in hoodies, T-shirts and flannel. The real draw, however, are the clothes designed by local graffiti artist The Killer Gerbil. Sup Clothing is the only store that stocks 'em.

White Room

This retail space was started by one of the members of local design shop :phunk studio as a showcase for collaborations with Singapore fashion designers. The in-house label, Brispers by White Room House Collection, is a nifty example.

I am a computer dude and ex-academic (although I won’t say it too loudly) who took time off to tour Asia and write about it. And I’ve not stopped writing since.
