The Merlion gets a makeover by Salvatore Ferragamo

Our half-lion, half-fish of a national icon has been given a designer stamp of approval. But will you wear it?

Now you can fashion The Merlion into a Windsor Knot.

We're with you, the Merlion just isn't cool.

It's a kind of cute, definitely quirky, half-fish, half-lion creature that seems to have come out of a weird dream. Wonder what Prince Sang Nila Utama was smoking the day he spotted it?

As national icons go, we could be worse off.

Someone however -- namely Mrs. Fulvia Visconti Ferragamo, daughter of Salvatore Ferragamo -- has deemed our beloved Merlion a style icon, fashioning its lion-fish form into an elegant motif now seen on 400 of the brand's silk ties.

The result isn't half bad, no doubt helped by the presence of the Vanda Miss Joaquim and the Traveler’s Palm on the motif. It'll make for a great souvenior and it's certainly one fashionably acceptable way to wear your national pride. Gentlemen, this means you can put the PAP-approved all-white ensemble and garish, loud batik shirts in storage, permanently.

We knew that would pique your interest.

Available at S$250 each from the Salvatore Ferragamo store in Paragon (#01-04/05 Paragon, 290 Orchard Road; tel +65 67383206).
