Just a decade ago, the specialty brew scene here was close to desert like. Today there are many Singapore beer pubs stocking imported brews, and a number of microbreweries and beer-centric pubs scattered all over the island. Here are 10 places (in alphabetical order) to raise a mug to, besides Paulaner Brauhaus.

Little Creatures Bright Ale

1. Alchemy

A small outfit that opened in April 2010, Alchemy Bistro features over 20 craft beers from all corners of the world. They include ales, beers, Lambic fruit beers and Trappist beers. For the true beer connoisseur, they also hold MBA (Masters in Beer Appreciation) sessions. Stave off the post-work hunger pangs with a small selection of finger food, snacks and dessert and if you prefer a beer-garden atmosphere, there is a small alfresco area.

Archipelago Singapore

2. Archipelago Brewery

The first commercial brewery in Singapore, they're the people who brewed Anchor Beer back in 1931. Since then, it has become part of Asia Pacific Breweries and has become one of the true Singapore beer pubs producing beers with local spices and flavours -- standard pilsners and ales blended with lemongrass, tamarind, calamansi lime, pandan and even traditional Chinese medicine ingredients like wolfberries and Chinese orange peel. To learn more about their unusual concoctions, brewmaster Fal Allen has his own blog.

Brewerkz Singapore

3. Brewerkz

The only microbrewery in Singapore with external brewing premises, its award-winning beers have helped build a steady following since opening in 1997. The signature beers fall into four main categories; the malty full-bodied India Pale Ale, the Golden Ale with a subtle fruity note, the straw-colored Pilsner Lager and a hand-pumped Hopback Ale. They also offer Belgian-style beers and occasionally bring out special concoctions for occasions such as the Oktoberfest.

Brewerkz has three outlets at Riverside Point, Indoor Stadium and Bukit Timah. Check their website for full details.

Brussel Sprouts Singapore

4. Brussels Sprouts

The moules frites (mussels and fries) with free refill of fries, may be a huge draw at this riverfront bistro, but many come here to check out their 120 tasty Belgian beers. There’s a wide range from pale blondes to fruity malted grain brews and there's talk of a second branch opening in September 2010 in the eastern part of Singapore ... watch this space.
