The best events of ShanghaiPRIDE
ShanghaiPRIDE, China's biggest openly gay festival, has super-sized itself this year to three weeks and includes events ranging from academic panel discussions to a gay karaoke contests.
Organizers of some of the city's most active gay groups give us their picks.
Xiang Qi, moderator of the lesbian group Nv Ai
ShanghaiPRIDE 2010 picks: Panel discussions, Lala Night and LiberAsian Party
When: Wednesday, October 20 at 8 p.m.; Thursday, October 28 at 9 p.m. and Saturday, November 6 at 11 p.m.
“Some big names will be joining the panel discussions, and there will be one day particularly dedicated to lesbian events. Compared to last year, all these are big improvements. Holding a big party to celebrate diversity and to express ourselves is a much less stressful way and it suits China better at this stage.”
Ray Mahoney (aka “gay Jesus”), gay-rights NGO worker
ShanghaiPRIDE 2010 picks: Queer Film Festival and the Gay Games
When: Monday to Friday, November 1 to 5 at 8 p.m., and Sunday, October 24 at 2 p.m.
“Filmmaker Fan Popo's film about coming out will give people, especially Chinese parents, exactly the kind of exposure to gay issues that they need. Gay Games will be a good introduction to foreigners about local gay groups and how foreigners can get involved even if they don't speak much Chinese. Besides, athletes are always pleasant to look at.”
Lao Ximen, organizer of Horizon Gay Running Group
ShanghaiPRIDE 2010 pick: Photo exhibition
When: Tuesday, October 19, 8 p.m.
“Although I highly respect the organizers efforts, I find most of the events could take place any time of the year. I have high expectations for the photo exhibition which will be organized by the InLemon group. I expect to see an exhibition of all aspects of lives of ordinary gay people in Shanghai. The good side and the bad side, that's all of our lives.”
CNNGO's ShanghaiPRIDE 2010 pick: Panel discussion
When: Friday, October 22 at 8 p.m.
Although organizers of the festival are asking to keep the name of panelists under wraps, we can tell you that a few “celebrities” in Chinese gay issues will be present, including a sexologist and gay activists.
