Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor fronts new CNN documentary
The Freedom Project is an insightful new documentary revealing traditions of human trafficking in an Indian village
The CNN Freedom Project is partnering with acclaimed Bollywood actor and film producer Anil Kapoor, star of "Slumdog Millionaire", to see what modern-day slavery looks like in his home country, India.
The half-hour program, "Trapped by Tradition: A CNN Freedom Project Documentary", chronicles Kapoor’s trip to a remote village in northern India where nearly all of the women have been sent into prostitution or sex slavery, often by male members of their own family or community.
One of the women he meets says her brother convinced her to join the business more than 20 years ago and everything she’s earned is used to support her family.
But thanks to work done by organizations like PlanIndia, the numbers of trafficking victims in this region are decreasing every month.
“It was clear we must change the mindset of the people in [Bharatpur] -- they had to understand there are other options," said Kapoor.
