Heineken India: Now brewed in our backyard

India becomes the 48th country where Heineken is brewed locally

Heineken in India will be made with high quality malted barley and hops imported from Europe.

A quick note to tell Mumbaikars that Heineken is now being made in India -- near Mumbai in fact.

The company that makes Kingfisher, United Breweries, is brewing the premium lager in a town called Taloja but packaging it in imported green embossed 650 milliliter and 330 milliliter bottles with clear plastic labels -- a first for any beer brand in India.

"We will leverage our deep understanding of the Indian beer market," says Kalyan Ganguly, president and managing director, United Breweries Limited. "... and the strength of our nationwide distribution network."

Beer drinkers in Mumbai and Pune are the first to taste it, after which the local drop will be rolled out to the rest of the country over the next few months.

In Maharashtra the big bottle costs Rs 170 and the smaller one Rs 100.
