Best Hong Kong hotels under US$100
Save money without losing your dignity by staying at these lovely yet affordable Hong Kong hotels
Despite rumors to the contrary, there really are Hong Kong hotels with considerate staff and clean rooms that won't rack up enormous bills requiring the selling of body parts to pay off.
It's possible to get well-treated and spend under US$100 a night at these cosy joints that are a far cry from the infamously dirt-cheap Chungking Mansions.
All hotel prices are subject to seasonal fluctuation, contact the hotel directly for the latest promotional rate.
1. Wanchai: Mingle Place by The Park
Step off of the teeming streets of Wanchai into this Hong Kong hotel and you will find quiet and privacy.
Housed in a 1960s residential building, the hotel strives to feel like an old Chinese apartment by maintaining much of the original structural features and decoration with vintage items and old photographs. It has a charming, nostalgic, sepia-toned Hong Kong atmosphere.
There is no restaurant, gym or elevator, but there is a quiet rooftop garden where guests can "mingle." Alternatively, hide in your room and avoid contact with everyone while checking out the audio and video library.
As low as HK$600 +10 percent per night for a standard room. Free Wi-Fi. Mingle by the Park, 143 Wanchai Road, Wanchai, +852 2838 1109 www.mingleplace.com
2. Kennedy Town: Cosco Hotel
Cosco Hotel's Kennedy Town location is it's best feature. The residential neighborhood and waterfront location mean guests get a quiet respite away from the center of town, as well as incredible harbor-view rooms.
However, this business hotel is a sleep-but-don't-linger kind of place where you will have to overlook the wear and tear of the rooms and hit the streets to find your breakfast. But this isn't a real problem considering the neighborhood features a huge variety of eateries from local food to Western cafés.
Cosco Hotel also offers free Internet access, which is something even the priciest Hong Kong business hotels around town rarely can promise.
As low as HK$780 + 10 percent per night for a standard room. Free Wi-Fi. Cosco Hotel, 20–21 Kennedy Town Praya Road, +852 2816 2878 www.cosco.com.hk
3. North Point: Ibis North Point
Located just a minute's stroll from the MTR North Point Station, the Ibis North Point offers harbor-view rooms and easy city access without guests paying dearly.
The designers of this Hong Kong hotel know the meaning of "compact" -- bend over to tie your shoelace and your head might hit the wall. However, the rooms do have all the necessary amenities tucked neatly away. And you don't have to go far for tech needs, city info, or fuel as the hotel features a business center, tour desk and restaurant.
As low as HK$780 +10 percent per night for standard room.

4. Mongkok: The Anne Black YWCA
If you're up for bare-bones rooms, The Anne Black YWCA might be your affordable choice for sleeping in Mongkok.
Nestled slightly away from the bustle of central Mongkok, this Hong Kong hotel offers a bit of serenity, but you won’t necessarily want to hang out in your plain, utilitarian room.
Not to worry, there is plenty to do nearby. This is a great location to access the swarming, colorful neighborhood streets such as the Ladies' Market and the Temple Street Night Market. The Anne Black has easy access to public transport to check out the rest of the city too.
As low as HK$410 +10 percent per night for a single room with private bath. Ann Black YWCA, 5 Man Fuk Road, Waterloo Road Hill Kowloon, +852 2713 9211 hotel.ywca.org.hk/eng/AnneBlack
5. Mid-levels: Bishop Lei International House
This sweet little Hong Kong hotel on swanky Robinson Road is a secret we're reluctant to give away. It's location is a one minute walk from the SoHo escalators and overlooks the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens, making it a great location for business travelers with offices and meetings in Central.
There is also an outdoor swimming pool and a shuttle bus service from the hotel to Central, Admiralty, and Wanchai. Drawbacks? The rooms are really small and the staff are not as polished as we would expect from such an upscale address.
As low as HK$550 +10 percent per night for a standard room during the low season from May to June. Online bookings recommended for the best rate. Bishop Lei International House, 4 Robinson Road, Mid-Levels, +852 268 0828 www.bishopleihtl.com.hk
