Frugal nights: Decent, inexpensive Hong Kong hotels

Save money without losing your dignity by staying at these lovely yet affordable Hong Kong hotels

Mingle by the Park is a refurbished tong lau in Wanchai.

There really are Hong Kong hotels with considerate staff and clean rooms that won't rack up enormous bills that require the selling of body parts to pay back. It's possible to feel well-treated and spend under US$100 a night at these cosy joints that are a far cry from the infamously dirt-cheap Chungking Mansions. Here are a few affordable Hong Kong hotels to start off with:

1. Wanchai: Mingle Place by The Park

Step off of the teeming streets of Wanchai into this hotel and you will find a quiet, private place to hang your hat. Housed in a 1960s residential building, the hotel strives to feel like an old Chinese apartment by maintaining much of the original structural features and decorating with vintage items and old photographs. It has a charming, nostalgic, sepia-toned Hong Kong atmosphere.

There is no restaurant or gym, but there is a quiet rooftop garden where guests can "mingle." Alternatively, hide in your room and avoid contact with everyone while checking out the audio and video library.

As low as HK$500 +10% per night for a standard room during the low season between May-June. Free WiFi.

2. Kennedy Town: Cosco Hotel

Cosco Hotel's Kennedy Town location is it's best feature. The residential neighborhood and waterfront location mean guests get a quiet respite away from the center of town, as well as incredible harborview rooms. However, this business hotel is a sleep-but-don't-linger kind of place where you will have to hit the streets to find your breakfast. But this isn't a real problem considering the neighborhood features a huge variety of eateries from local food to Western cafés. Cosco Hotel also offers free Internet access, which is something even the priciest business hotels around town rarely can promise.

As low as HK$480 +10% per night for a standard room for the low season between May-June. Free WiFi.

3. North Point: Ibis North Point

Located just a minute's stroll from the MTR North Point Station, the Ibis North Point offers harborview rooms and easy city access without guests paying dearly. The designers of this hotel know the meaning of "compact" -- bend over to tie your shoelace and your head might hit the wall. However, the rooms do have all the necessary amenities tucked neatly away. And you don't have to go far for tech needs, city info, or fuel as the hotel features a business center, tour desk and restaurant.

4. Mongkok: The Anne Black YWCA

If you're up for bare-bones rooms, The Anne Black YWCA might be your affordable choice for sleeping in Mongkok. Nestled slightly away from the bustle of central Mongkok, the hotel offers a bit of serenity, but you won’t necessarily want to hang out in your plain, utilitarian room. Not to worry, there is plenty to do nearby. This is a great location to access the swarming, colorful neighborhood streets, nearby sights such as the Ladies' Market and the Temple Street Night Market and there's easy access to public transport to check out the rest of the city too.

As low as HK$396 +10% per night for a single room with private bath during the low season from May to June.

5. Mid-levels: Bishop Lei International House

This sweet little place on swanky Robinson Road is a secret we're reluctant to give away. It's location is a one minute walk from the SoHo escalators and the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens, making it a great location for business travelers with offices and meetings in Central. There is also an outdoor swimming pool and a shuttle bus service from the hotel to Central, Admiralty, and Wanchai. Drawbacks are, rooms are really small and the staff are not as polished as we would expect from such an upscale address.

As low as HK$550 +10% per night for a standard room during the low season from May to June. Online bookings recommended for the best rate.
