A scene from Hong Kong's most-hyped movie of the moment, "3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy."

According to the Hollywood Reporter, "3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy" broke records as the highest-grossing 3D debut in Hong Kong, raking in HK$2.79 million on its first day, April 14.

The 3D erotica not only beat "Avatar," which made HK$2.5 million on opening day in 2009, but it also double the HK$1.2 million opening of Category III-peer "Lust, Caution."

The new record by "3D Sex and Zen" marks a return to the soft porn throne for producer Stephen Shiu Sr.

The original "Sex and Zen" released in 1991 also by Shiu Sr. held the original record for the highest grossing Chinese-language adult-only film in Hong Kong for 17 years. It was finally usurped by "Lust, Caution" in 2007.

The special ladies' only screenings of the erotic movie have been sold out and box office numbers are looking good as the city gears up for the May 1 holiday. Chinese mainland tourists are expected to flood Hong Kong cinemas during the Golden Week to watch the film that is banned on the mainland.
