Which cities fared well, and poorly, in the latest Global Livability Survey?
Melbourne: the best place to hang your hat in 2011 and 2012.

Melbourne is the world’s most livable city for the second year in a row, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) Global Livability Survey.

The top cities remained the same as last year, with a slight reshuffle in order and Australian and Canadian locations continuing to dominate.

Vienna came a close second while Canadian cities Vancouver and Toronto took third and fourth; Calgary tied with Adelaide for fifth place.

The top spots are mostly “mid-sized cities in wealthier countries with a relatively low population density,” said the EIU.

A total of 140 cities were surveyed under five categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure.

Japan hosts Asia's most liveable city

Osaka, ranked 12th overall, scored the highest in Asia. Tokyo came second at 18th while Hong Kong nabbed 31st.

Honolulu is the most livable city in the United States, coming in at 26th; Pittsburg was just behind at 30th.

Abidjan, Tehran, Douala, Tripoli, Karachi, Algiers, Harare, Lagos, Port Moresby, together with the capital of Bangladesh, Dhaka languish at the bottom of the list. Conflict was the main reason for many of the lowest scores, according to the survey.

Civil unrest was one of the reasons Olympic host London slipped from 53 to 55.
