Tightfisted travel poll reveals cheapest trips

For a cheapo night, head out in Hanoi. But to splurge, London will burn through your cash
Good morning, Hanoi, Vietnam, you affordable -- dare we say, cheap -- beauty.

Of all the joints in all the world for a romantic overnight break for two, it seems London is the most expensive, while Hanoi offers the best value for money -- all worth knowing when counting the pennies and pondering where they might take you and yours this year.

That's according to TripAdvisor's TripIndex 2012 annual night-out rankings, published this week.

The travel site released its findings Wednesday, comparing the cost of an overnight stay for two people (it doesn't have to involve romance, FYI) in 48 cities around the world.

The modest-sounding sojourn includes one night in a four-star hotel, cocktails, a two-course dinner with a bottle of wine and the cost of taxis for the evening.

Hanoi proved to be the most affordable at a touch over US$141, while London turned out to be the priciest at a comparatively eye-watering $518. We can't say we're surprised.

The company knows it's playing to the crowd with the populist value-for-money survey.

"TripIndex helps travelers see where they will get more bang for their buck,” says Jean Ow Yeong, a TripAdvisor Asia spokesperson.

“Once on the ground, European cities such as Budapest and Warsaw turn out to be as affordable as some Asian cities," she adds.

It's not all roses for Asia (and Down Under), though.

"Singapore and Sydney rank alongside London, Paris and New York as some of the most expensive cities,” says Ow Yeong.

As for the reasons behind the gulf in prices, most of it comes down to the cost of hotels.

Bangkok came out with the least-expensive hotel room on average, at $81 per night, while the most expensive was London, at close to $362.

Of course, much of this is rendered moot, as flying to Hanoi to save a few bucks if you're already in London won't make much sense. Unless you're feeling really romantic.
