New hotel booking site aims to make it easier being green
If the key to getting more people to stay at eco-friendly hotels is by making it as easy as possible to book them, one website may be unlocking the solution.
Operating out of the Netherlands, BookDifferent claims to be the first booking site in the world to allow users to compare eco and non-eco hotels.
“We believe there is a strong green awareness among leisure and business travelers which will continue to grow,” said BookDifferent chairman Bastiaan Fronik.
“To meet their expectations we want to work together with many more eco-labels in the future.”
Users can search for hotels in their city of choice, but rather than simply listing all hotels by price or review ratings, this site allows you to filter down by various criteria, including the green awards.
Hotels with a Green Key award have fulfilled various requirements covering environmental management, staff involvement (in eco issues) and water usage, among many others.
Hotels with a Green Globe award save energy and water, reduce operating costs and contribute to local communities and their environments.
It’s early days, so while Amsterdam brings up 52 Green Key certified hotels and three with a Green Globe, London comes back with zero.
So far, just over 1,000 of BookDifferent’s 245,000 hotels have one of the eco awards.
BookDifferent advertises itself as a non-profit foundation, donating half its revenue to charities of its users’ choice, while also guaranteeing users get the best rates available.
