Bangkok dance lessons: 9 styles and where to learn them

Fulfill that lifelong dream of learning to tango. Or pole dance. This city has moves for everyone

Maybe you've always wanted to learn to tango. Or perhaps you already know how to shake your hips but want to improve your dance floor grooves. 

Bangkok has a massive supply of dance classes to suit all tastes and levels. Here are nine styles of dance and the schools teaching them.

1. Salsa

Fast-paced and oh-so-sexy, salsa originated in Cuba and quickly spread through the Latin American world, eventually making its way to Bangkok.

School: Temples Irish Bar
When/where:  Sukhumvit Soi 11, beside Bed Supperclub. Beginner classes every Monday, 9-10 p.m.     
Cost: Free 

School: Salsa Hacha
When/where: Beginner class on Wednesday, 7-8 p.m. at their studio near Sala Daeng Station
Cost: First class free

School: La Rueda
When/where: Beginner classes on Thursdays from 9-10 p.m., on Sukhumvit Soi 18

2. Tango

Native to Argentina, this sensual dance is one of the most popular in the world. Not to mention it looks pretty damn cool when performed.

School: Tango Bangkok
When/Where: Thursdays from 7-8 p.m. at Dream Hotel’s Flava Bar
Cost: 150 baht/class

School: Xperience Bar
When/where: Tuesday 7:30-8:30 p.m., Thonglor Eight Building, Sukhumvit soi 55
Cost: 400 baht/class (includes food, drink and dance practice afterwards)

Capoeira in BangkokCapoeira: The only dance that combines martial arts and music.

3. Capoeira

A fusion of martial arts and dance, this Brazilian born art teaches quick, complex moves and aerial acrobatics.

When/Where: Thursdays from 6:30 until 8 p.m. at House of Pro Studio (HOPS), Phahonyothin Soi 5 (Soi Rajakhru)      
Cost: 100 baht/class  

4. Jazz

Get those ‘jazz hands’ waving with a few jazz dancing courses, where you’ll also learn important techniques like center control, spotting and pointing.     

School: Dance Centre School of Performing Arts      
When/Where:  Saturdays from 11a.m.-noon at The Capitol Club, Sukhumvit Soi 24      
Cost: 500 baht/class (packages available)

5. Belly Dancing

Once used to entertain to guests at fairs and parties in the Middle Ages, this Middle Eastern dance utilizes all parts of the body, though is most concentrated on the hips.

6. Swing

It don't mean a thing, if it ain't got that swing. Originating in the 1950s, swing is a high-energy partner dance that originated in Harlem, New York and quickly spread all over the world.     

School: Rum Puree
When/where: Every Monday from 8-9 p.m.  5th floor of Amarin Plaza on Ploenchit Road
Cost: 400 baht/class (packages available)

7. Ballet

Ballet incorporates balance, poise, and extreme strength. Don’t let the tutus fool you: this is not a dance style for wussies.

School: Bangkok City Ballet
When/where: Classes daily, check online for full schedule. 6th Floor City Resort 49, Sukhumvit Soi 49
Cost: 500 baht registration, 500 baht per class (packages available)  

8. Hip-hop

What started on the streets has migrated into every music video on MTV. Hip-hop remains a nightclub staple in Bangkok, thus justifying the cost of learning quality dance moves.

Cost: 300 baht/class for non-members, 200 baht for members

9. Pole dancing

Long gone are the days when pole dancing was considered strictly for strippers. A combination of dancing and gymnastics, this performing art will work wonders on the old physique. And may even spice things up in the bedroom if you're so inclined.

If you’ve got a little extra money and would like some personalized attention to really move up the dancing chain, private lessons may be the way to go.
