Songkran scandal: Topless teen revelers spark outrage in Bangkok

Thailand’s Culture Ministry steps in after a video of young, wet females dancing topless near Silom Road goes viral

Songkran ThailandThis is the clean, wholesome image of Songkran that Thailand wants the world to see. Not girls gone wild. Officials in Bangkok are outraged over a viral video of teen girls dancing topless near Silom Road during last week’s Thai new year celebrations, claiming the clip is tarnishing Songkran’s image as a family-friendly event.

"Apart from being fined, the topless girls should be required to do some cultural work,” Culture Minister Nipit Intarasombat was quoted by The Nation. “For example, they should be made to read books about the Songkran Festival for young students to listen to as part of the punishment."

Meanwhile, the director of Bangkok's Bang Rak district office on Sunday lodged obscenity charges with police against the three young Thai women.

The Bangkok Post reports that the clip, which lasts more than a minute and shows three girls dancing on top of a vehicle amid cheering crowds and loud music, was filmed on Friday night, the last day of the Songkran festival.

The video quickly made the rounds on Twitter and Facebook over the weekend. Many mocked what they felt was the government’s misplaced outrage over a few bare female breasts given the video was allegedly shot just a few steps from a neighborhood renowned for its prostitution and illegal sex shows.

And no, we aren’t going to post a link to it. Sorry.
