Eating Thai Food Guide: 88 pages of tips, food porn and meal plans

A Bangkok food blogger has put together an essential guide to expanding your eating repertoire beyond the usual pad Thai and green curry

eating thai food guideStuck in a Thai rut? Eat your way out of it with this book. Whether you’re a Bangkok resident or a tourist, it’s easy to get stuck in a Thai food rut and order the same dishes at every restaurant you hit, either out of habit or because you don’t know what else to try.

Aiming to help eaters expand their culinary boundaries, Bangkok-based food blogger Mark Wiens has put together a great 88-page guide filled with photos and info on how to order a well-rounded Thai meal.

“I noticed a trend of many travelers and people living in Thailand that would eat just a select few Thai dishes on a rotating schedule,” he says.

“I was inspired to write this guide in order to help people discover new Thai food options, order full meals that emphasize a balance of flavors and to assist in ordering Thai food with personalized requests, as Thai food should be ordered to your own liking.”

There are also sections highlighting the best street food dishes, cooking styles, key food phrases (in English and Thai), eating etiquette, Bangkok’s best Thai food neighborhoods and a noodle guide.

Wiens has been eating his way through Thailand for the last three years, documenting his feasts on Eatingthaifood.com.

At the moment he’s intrigued by the flavors of the Thai south.

“I just can't get over the flavorful curries and soups,” he says. “In the south you order something sour and it will make you squirm, or order something spicy and it will make you cry -- I like that.”

The Eating Thai Food Guide, available in PDF form, can purchased online through Eatingthaifood.com for US$7.
