Andrew Eames started out as a travel writer in the early 1980s, whilst living in Southeast Asia. Back in the UK he rose through the ranks of magazine publishing and then into newspapers, including a stint on the Times. 

He's been freelance for the last 20 years, and has written five books, the latest of which - Blue River Black Sea - is an account of his journey down the Danube by bicycle, on foot, on horseback, in a rowing boat, and as a crewman on a freight barge. He lives in London.
